ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PILLOWS & DUVETS

How to select the right duvet for you

  1. Select the correct tog rating:
    1. 4.5 TOG - Summer use
    2. 10.5 TOG - Autumn and Spring use or Winter in a very warm house
    3. 12 TOG - Winter in warmer houses
    4. 13.5 TOG - Winter use in cooler houses
    5. 15 TOG - Winter use in a cold environment
    6. All Seasons - A combination of 10.5 tog and 4.5 tog duvets which can be used together or separately to provide ideal warmth for all seasons. The 2 duvets can be attached using the Velcro tabs.
  2. Select a natural or synthetic duvet:
    1. Synthetic - our synthetic duvets are lightweight and provide good loft. Recent advances in fibre technology have produced lighter fibres than previous with good quality fibre able to imitate the drape of natural filings. Synthetic fibres are non-allergenic and therefore do not stimulate an allergic reaction. Our synthetic duvets provide excellent value.
    2. Natural - natural duvets are breathable and extremely durable and therefore capable of providing good service for many years. Natural fillings absorb and transport moisture away from the body providing more comfort throughout the night. The down provides softness and warmth with the feathers providing weight for that cosy feel!
  3. A number of products within the range are treated with an inhibitive anti-bacterial finish which discourages the presence of dust-mites by preventing the growth of bacteria. These products are the Silentnight anti-bacterial duvet and the natural Duck Feather & Down (with anti-bacterial treatment). These products can provide relief for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.
  4. Select the right size duvet:
STANDARD UK BED SIZES DUVET SIZE
    Single 91 x 191 cm / 3ft x 6ft 3" 135 x 200 cm / 4ft 6" x 6ft 7"
    Double 137 x 191 cm / 4ft 6" x 6ft 3" 200 x 200 cm / 6ft 7" x 6ft 7"
    King Size 152 X 198 cm / 5ft x 6ft 6" 225 x 220 cm / 7ft 5" x 7ft 3"
    Super King 183 x 198 cm / 6ft x 6ft 6" 260 x 220 cm / 8ft 6" x 7ft 3"
  5. Many consumers use one duvet size greater than the standard size for extra comfort, warmth and to ensure they remain covered by the duvet all times!
  6. If you and your partner find you cannot agree on a tog rating to suit your individual warmth requirements then why not buy two single duvets of different tog ratings.

How to select the right pillow for you

  1. Select a natural or synthetic pillow
    1. Synthetic - Synthetic fibres are non-allergenic and therefore do not stimulate an allergic reaction. Recent advances in fibre technology have resulted in fibres which are able to provide extra support for example the sprung polyester used in our `Deepsleep` and Superspring antibacterial pillow pair.
    2. Natural - Natural pillows are breathable and absorb and transport moisture away from the head, providing more comfort throughout the night.
  2. How firm do you require your pillow? The firmer the pillow the more support it will provide for your head. The ideal level of support required will vary for each individual. The memory foam pillow provides unrivalled support and comfort. Our Airflow pillow will provide a firmer style of pillow for people who require extra support.
  3. A number of products within the range are treated with an inhibitive anti-bacterial finish which discourages the presence of dust-mites by preventing the growth of bacteria. These are the Silentnight anti-bacterial pillow, the natural Duck Feather & Down (with anti-bacterial treatment) and the Superspring anti-bacterial pillow pair. These products can provide relief for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.

Care Information

  1. Natural and synthetic pillows can be washed and tumble dried. The pillow needs to be completely dried to prevent the build up of mildew. Check the care label for detailed instructions.
  2. Synthetic duvets can be laundered at home subject to the size of your domestic washing machine. Most domestic washing machines will fit a single duvet but not a double, king or superking, in which case the duvet would need to be taken to a professional cleaner. Check the care label for detailed instructions.
  3. Natural duvets can be taken to professional cleaners to be laundered and dried. The professional cleaners have large drying machines which are used to ensure the duvet is fully dried and therefore prevent the build up of mildew.
  4. Duvets and pillows must not be dry cleaned.
  5. Between washes shake your duvet on a daily basis to allow the product to air. Try to hang your duvet outside as frequently as possible to fully air the product, ensuring the duvet does not get damp.

How frequently should I change my duvet and pillow?

At Sleep Limited we recommend that you replace your synthetic duvet at least every 5 years and synthetic pillows more frequently every 2-3 years. A good quality natural duvet can last up to 10 years, with natural pillows lasting up to 5 years.

Explanation of terms

TermExplanation
Air FlowHoles are pre cut in the foam providing improved air flow through the product.
AllergySometimes the body reacts to certain substances such as house dust, dust mite droppings or down and feathers. A person having an allergic reaction may suffer from skin irritation, runny nose, watering eyes, sneezing or in severe cases an asthma attack.
Anti-bacterialBedding products that help to prevent allergies and bacterial growth are termed anti-allergy. They may provide a barrier to allergens for example an anti-allergy mattress or pillow protector. Sometimes manufactures use chemical treatments to create anti-allergy products.
Cassette constructionRectangular pockets to keep the filling evenly spread when in use. No more cold spots and filling trapped in the end of the duvet!
Double stitched seamsTwo rows of stitching are provided for improved strength.
DownThe soft clusters found on the breast of a duck or goose. Down is very good at trapping air and so keep you warm. Down has no quill and so is lightweight and very soft.
Dust mite A tiny microbiological creature that lives on house dust. Found in even the cleanest of homes, they tend to live in the mattress. Their droppings may cause allergies.
Easy CareAn easy care finish can be applied to fabrics which will reduce the need to iron the product.
Egyptian Cotton FabricsSoft tightly woven fabric that has been manufactured from fine, long and strong cotton fibre.
Elasticized Corner StrapsLengths of elastic attached to the Topper that ensures it stays in position on the mattress. The elastic wraps under the corner of the mattress.
Firm rating pillowPillows are classed from soft to firm. Soft providing little support, firm providing maximum support.
g/m2This is the weight per square meter of the filling. The higher the g/m2 rating the thicker the filling.
Hollowfibre Cylindrical shaped fibre e.g. the same shape as hose pipe. This traps air more effectively than a solid fibre and so makes a duvet warmer. Similarly the hollow fibre shape is harder to bend and so provides structure and loft. It is therefore possible to increase warmth and loft for less weight.
Mattress enhancer/ Topper.A topper for the mattress that can be up to 12cm thick to provide extra comfort. An enhancer may help to extend the life of an older mattress or provide extra softness to a firmer mattress.
Mattress protector/ Cover.A covering for the mattress to provide protection against everyday spills or a barrier to allergens.
Memory FoamViscose elastic foam that will retain its original shape after each use.
PercaleA closely woven, plain weave fabric. The high thread count gives the fabric a soft, silk-like feel. Used for bedding sheets, bedspreads and the higher quality duvet cover. Percale fabrics have a thread count of 180 and above. (Higher thread counts indicate higher quality fabrics.)
Piped edge The high-quality finish on a duvet, pillow or used as part of the design on bedding. Fabric is stitched around a cord and secured into the seam.
Plain DyedA piece of fabric that has been dyed one colour
Polyester The man-made fibre derived from oil based products used to fill most synthetic duvets and pillows. Polyester is non-allergenic, provides good warmth and is very affordable, but is less breathable than naturally occurring fillings such as down and feather. Polyester is normally used in a blend for bedding fabrics.
SizesThe most common bed sizes in the U.K. are:-
Single: 91cm x 191cm = 3ft x 6ft 3"
Double: 137cm x 191cm = 4ft 6" x 6ft 3"
King: 152cm x 198cm = 5ft x 6ft 6"
Super King: 183cm x 198cm = 6ft x 6ft 6"
Sprung Polyester A “polyester” fibre that is spiral shaped to provide improved shape and recovery.
TeflonA coating applied to the fabric surface to protect against staining and minor spillages.
TogThe tog value that often appears on duvets is a measure of their warmth or insulating value, technically called thermal resistance. The term is in common usage in the textile industry as the unit of thermal resistance.
The higher the number the greater the heat retained. The lowest tog value is 4.5 and they increase in 1.5 intervals to a maximum of 15.
Tog rating is simply a measure of how efficient the duvet is in preventing that heat from escaping.
WaddingThis is the polyester filling trapped between the two layers of fabric.
